Finding the Start of the Wales Coast Path - Chester

We finally made it to the very start of the Wales Coast Path - tucked away just outside Chester, where England meets Wales. It’s a spot that feels surprisingly peaceful given how close it is to the city, and it marks the beginning of one of the most beautiful walking routes anywhere in the UK. An incredible 870 miles of coastal scenery wrapping right around Wales.
If you’ve never walked a section before, this first stretch is the perfect place to start. It’s flat, accessible, and ideal for both walkers and cyclists, following the River Dee as it winds its way toward the estuary. You’ll pass through open fields, saltmarsh, and quiet lanes - all while catching glimpses of the Clwydian Range in the distance.
We combined our walk with a stop at Chester Market for lunch - highly recommended if you’re in the area. There’s so much choice, from fresh street food to coffee and sweet treats, and it’s got that relaxed, friendly buzz that makes you want to linger.
Whether you’re planning to complete the whole path or just dip your toes in with a short section, starting here gives you a real feel for what the Wales Coast Path is all about — variety, open space, and that ever-present sense of connection to the sea.
If you’re inspired to make a start (or already well on your way), our Wales Coast Path Pinboard and Print are a great way to track your progress and celebrate your journey along the route. From Chester to Chepstow, every mile tells a story - and there’s something special about seeing your adventures build up on the wall.
You can find both the Wales Coast Path Pinboard and Print on our website — perfect motivation for your next outing!
