Moel Gyw from Llanarmon-yn-Iâl | No. 95 - Welsh Marilyns

Sometimes you don’t need to head deep into Eryri for a great day in the hills.

This time, the destination was Moel Gyw, one of the hills of the Clwydian Range, starting from the small village of Llanarmon-yn-Iâl.

Another summit on the Welsh Marilyns list — and number 95 for Casgliad.

Starting from Llanarmon-yn-Iâl

Llanarmon-yn-Iâl makes a lovely starting point for this walk. Leaving the village behind, the route soon takes you out into open countryside and gradually upwards towards the Clwydian hills.

As you gain height, the landscape begins to open up.

That’s one of the things I love about walks like this. Moel Gyw might not have the height or drama of some of the bigger mountains in Wales, but you’re rewarded with increasingly wide views as you climb.

And sometimes, those quieter hills are exactly what you need.

A small summit with big views

At 467 metres, Moel Gyw certainly isn’t one of the giants of Wales.

But height isn’t everything.

Its position within the Clwydian Range gives it some fantastic views across the surrounding countryside and over the Vale of Clwyd. On a clear day, you can pick out other familiar summits along the range, including Moel Famau and Moel Fenlli.

It’s a reminder of something that’s becoming increasingly obvious as I work my way through the Welsh Marilyns:

A mountain doesn’t have to be huge to be worth climbing.

In fact, sometimes it’s the lesser-known summits that surprise you the most.

Number 95

Every summit on the Welsh Marilyns list adds something different to the journey.

Some are big days in the mountains.

Some are shorter adventures that can be squeezed into a few hours.

And some take you to corners of Wales that you might never have thought to explore otherwise.

That, for me, is one of the best things about taking on a challenge like this.

The list gives you a reason to get outside, but it’s the places you discover, the views you stop for and the little adventures along the way that you actually remember.

There’s something satisfying about reaching another summit and knowing it’s another one added to the collection.
